A tournament? I don't see what's so wrong about that. It provides perfect scouting opportunities. [ Know what strategies your opponents use before you face them! AND KNOWING IS 3/4 OF THE BATTLE.... ] As for the training camp, considering how he's one of the first gym leaders you beat in Kanto, I don't think what he has to offer is going to be too substantial.
